Abstract

The pathogenesis of nasal polyp is not well understood. Allergic rhinitis presenting with nasal polyposis is characterized by heavy infiltration of eosinophils into nasal polyp tissue. Major basic protein(MBP) is known to be one of the cytotoxic
proteins within the cytoplasm of eosinophils.
To elucidate the pathogenesis of nasal polyps, we determined distribution of eosinophils in nasal polyp tissue and apparently normal nasal mucosa using immunohistochemical staining with monoclonal antibody, BMK13. There was significant difference
in the
distribution of eosinoplils stained with BMK13 between allergic nasal polyps and apparently normal mucosa. The results of this study suggest that MBP secreted by eosinophils may have a cytotoxic effect on the nasal mucosa with resultant
polyposis.
